Hospital libraries
Hospital libraries – as medical subject libraries and/or patient libraries – form the second large group of medical libraries next to university libraries. The working group on hospital libraries was established in 1983 in order to deal with the special tasks and challenges these libraries are facing; it provides all colleagues with a platform for both the exchange of experience and further education and training. As most hospital libraries are One-Person-Libraries (OPL), the contact with comparable institutions is particularly important in order to be able to respond to current developments and provide medical library services on the highest professional level.
The members of the working group regularly meet in the context of the annual AGMB conferences. In addition to the working group itself, the conference program offers main topics and further education opportunities focusing on hospital libraries. Among the topics of past conferences are: library management software, online resources (journals, ebooks, clinical decision tools), presentation of service portfolios on the intranet/internet, human resources management, raising awareness within one´s own institution, special challenges for patient libraries (e.g. new media, ebook lending). Between conferences, members of the working group communicate through a mailing list, thus being able to receive quick answers to their questions.
The hospital, library is an important and multifaceted building block within the hospital system. Knowledge as a resource is quickly gaining in importance in all areas of hospital operations. Whether in the fields of research and publishing activities, evidence-based decisions in everyday clinical practice, treatment standards and quality control, online resources such as databases, ejournals and ebooks or the academization of training and further education for all professional groups, hospital libraries contribute significantly to the establishment of high standards of medical treatment and the strategic development of the hospital through expertise, a broad portfolio of services for the provision and optimization of information resources as well as through course and counselling services.
Last but not least, library services support the professional development of the hospital staff, thus contributing to the attractiveness of the hospital as a potential employer.
Many hospitals have a patients´ library, which is often linked with the subject library in terms of its premises and/or staff. Traditionally, the patients´ library serves the purpose of entertaining and distracting the patients during their stay at the hospital. Moreover, the library´s resources provide cultural and intellectual stimuli for the patients and support their intellectual confrontation with their own situation. The increasing digitization of media content and the growing number of mobile devices lead to changes in the patients´ specific wishes and generate a new demand for counselling and support services.
All of these tasks and developments demand of hospital librarians a broad range of skills and an enthusiasm for seizing new opportunities and ideas and putting them to use for colleagues, patients and the whole hospital.
The hospital libraries working group supports you in this process – and is looking forward to your cooperation!
