Dear Oliver,
To sort our journals for collection management purposes (like
cancellations or collection evaluation) we use the keywords in use by NLM
as printed in the List of journals of Index Medicus. You could also use
the list of journals indexed in EMBASE, there is a subject listing as
well. The third possiblity is to use the category listing of the Journal
Citation Reports of ISI. But I think a better unbiased answer wil be
given when there is no clear resemblance with the JCR, as most
researchers just follow the impact factor listing without really knowing
what the meaning, importance AND limitations are.
I received many helpful comments to such a listing by subject. The
individual researcher or professor does not have to read more than the
twenty to fifty journals of real interest instead of the 1200 current
titles we have in the library. You may expect them to add the one or two
titles that are of importance to that area, but were not included in the
list.
