I have made a comparison by hand of the journals covered by Current
Contents, reference update and Medical Sciences Weekly a few years ago.
It has been published in Health Libraries Review 1992;9:131-137.
In this article only numbers of journals in different subject categories
are mentioned.
I have the impression that in CC only Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry
and such categories are better covered than in medline or Embase.
Science and Nature and PNAS are only selectively indexed by Medline and
EMbase (not taking articles not related to the biomedical field).
In former days the Dutch Online Working Group (VOGIN) made comparisons of
databases (Medline - EMbase - BIOSIS). We only did comparison after a
subject search; we did not compare individual journal titles.
Elsevier people have compared the journal lists, they say, but I have not
seen the result other than in numbers of journals and percentages of overlap.
I would recommend to make a comparison for a limited number of journals
in the subcategory of interest, or to do a comparison online at DIMDI,
and making use of the report facility of frequency of journal titles in a
set.
Best regards,
Suzanne Bakker
