FOCUS ON....NEWS SERVICES
Publishing textual information on the Internet is quick and easy, and
this makes the network an ideal place for picking up news items on all
sorts of topics; medicine is no exception. Below are listed services,
some general, some subject specific, that are worthwhile bearing in
mind when looking for medical news that's just breaking.
Many services focus on health resources and can be searched.
Reuters Health Information Service
http://www.reutershealth.com/
5-10 top stories for today are offered in full and this service has a
short (2 months) searchable archive.
Your Daily Health from the New York Times
http://nytsyn.com:80/med/
Full text of health related stories, plus keyword search of archive and
a browsable section covering broad topics such as AIDS, cancer,
depression etc
For bioscience articles try the Nando Health and Science pages which
include popular science stories such as genetics and molecular biology
as well as health.
Nando Times (Associated Press)
http://www2.nando.net/nt/health/
Medscape also takes a broader approach, and prints the text of press
releases from major US agencies such as the FDA and NIAID.
Medscape News
http://www.medscape.com/home/News/Medscape-News.mhtml
In the UK, the ET has a browsable index to news stories that allows you
to navigate straight to the health related items. If you aren't already
registered you must do so before using this site, but it is well worth
it. Easily the best UK newspaper on the Web.
The Electronic Telegraph
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/
Specific diseases may be covered so often in the press that it is worth
treating them separately. AIDS is the most obvious example of this.
CDC AIDS Daily Summaries
http://www.cdcnac.org/summary.txt
The well known public service offered by the US Centre for Disease
Control. Summaries of news items related to AIDS presented in one text
file.
