FOCUS ON......AIDS AND HIV

The topic of HIV and AIDS is impressively covered on the Internet. The
global nature of the epidemic, its comparatively short history and the
perceived need of patients for access and rapid dissemination of the
latest clinical information are perhaps all contributing factors, but
whatever the reason, there is much to choose from. Here are some of the
best resources.

* General/Patient Information/Factsheets

Immunet provides a focus for quality information directed at those who
are HIV+ or AIDS patients.

<URL:http://www.immunet.org/>

In the UK, AVERT run a well maintained web site aimed at both patients
and carers with an emphasis on prevention.

<URL:http://www.oneworld.org/avert/>

FAQ's (lists of Frequently Asked Questions and answers) are often a
good source of basic information and there is one generated from the
newsgroup sci.med.aids at

<URL:http://family.hampshire.edu/aidsfaq/aidsfaq.html>

* Research

The Los Alamos National Laboratory compiles a sequence database for HIV
and other retroviruses, as well as an online version of "Human
Retroviruses and AIDS"

<URL:http://hiv-web.lanl.gov/>

The World Health Organization Global Programme on AIDS publishes
epidemiological data about the epidemic as well as information about
the project.

<URL:http://gpawww.who.ch/>

The molecular biology aspects of HIV/AIDS research are discussed
in one of the bionet newsgroups

<URL:news:bionet.molbio.hiv>

* Clinical Trials

The list of clinical trials maintained by the National Library of
Medicine is a good starting place

<URL:ftp://nlmpubs.nlm.nih.gov/aids/adatabases/trials.txt>

A list of UK clinical trials is maintained at Crusaid Centre

<URL:http://www.bluenet.co.uk/blue/star/ixa2z.htm>

who also make available the online version the AIDS Treatment Update.

* Public policy issues are aired in AIDS Matters Briefing which is
circulated by the National AIDS Trust, by e-mail. To receive it e-mail
listserv@posnet.co.uk with the message "subscribe NAT-UK-AMB" in the
body of the text. To get back issues, e-mail the same address with the
message "archive NAT-UK-AMB"

* Finally the newsgroup sci.med.aids is a lively forum which caters
for the interests of researchers, carers and patients alike.
