Subject: IFLA BIOMED Section

Join the International Medical Librarianship Community and become an active
member=20
of the Section of Biological and Medical Sciences Libraries within IFLA!=20

Do you know the "Biomed" Section within IFLA (International Federation of
Libraries=20
Associations)?

The Section of Biological and Medical Sciences Libraries was set up in 1978.
A committee=20
is elected every two years to promote the work of the Section, to plan the
conference=20
program which forms part of the annual IFLA Conference (about 2000
librarians from all=20
over the world attending !) and to publish a Newsletter. The section's focus
is one of=20
specialized information services for users, including electronic linkages to
subject=20
oriented data and document delivery services.

Presentation of a quality program requires advance planning and the focus of
the Standing=20
Committee (SC) is always the future.

The Biomed Section has about 60 members all around the world, but a few of
them comes=20
every year. Coming to the conference is the opportunity to collaborate in an
open forum=20
for international discussion, to share experiments with your colleagues and
to be part=20
of a group.

What about the goals of the Section for the coming years ?

The objectives are under regular review. The long-term projects are as
follows :=20

- the co-ordination of the planning for the International Congress on=
Medical=20
Librarianship every five years : the next one will be held in the year 2000=
in=20
London in conjonction with EAHIL and UK Libraries congresses.

- the co-operation with the World Health Organization (WHO), the FID and=
other=20
relevant international bodies such as the US National Library of Medicine.

During its last meeting in Istanbul (Summer 1995), the Standing Committee=
had d
efined several important goals and projects :

1. The electronic Newsletter : the first issue of the 1996 Newsletter (and=
the=20
Brochure presenting the Section) will appear in electronic version very=
soon.=20
For more information, do not hesitate : visit IFLA's World Wibe Web site at=
=20
http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/ifla/. We would be very happy to have your=
contribution=20
in our Newsletter ; contact Lucretia Mc Clure, editor, at the following
address :=20
146 Elmore Road Rochester NY - 14618 USA - LMC@db1.cc.Rochester.edu

2. Enforce and enlarge membership of the Section : contacts must be taken
towards=20
institutions and areas which have no representatives in the Section=
(Australia,=20
Japan or Middle-East). So, do not hesitate : contact us for immediate
boarding to=20
the Section !

3. The sponsoring of a junior librarian showing promises of leadership : to
realize=20
such a sponsorship, a librarian have to be selected. A working group on this
project=20
will meet during the next conference in Beijing.=20

The Beijing Program (IFLA 1996)

- The Beijing Program : the next IFLA meeting will take place in Beijing,
China, at=20
the end of August ; by now, it is very early to announce a final Program.
But, the=20
main theme of our Program session will be : East meets West in medical
librarianship ;=20
two Western papers have already been proposed and I am waiting for four
Chinese papers=20
to be confirmed. But, we need more ! If you have ideas or if your colleagues
are=20
interested to participate to the 62st IFLA meeting, contact me in a hurry !
Every=20
proposal is welcome.

Contact us for more details ! We will enjoy to have you in the Section.=20
