The Scientist-- on the Penn Library Web
http://www.the-scientist.library.upenn.edu/
The University of Pennsylvania Library became the host and publisher for
the World Wide Web edition of The Scientist beginning with the January
8, 1996 issue. The Scientist is a bi-weekly periodical containing news
and commentary on topics in the life sciences.
The new Penn-based edition of The Scientist, fully designed for the
World Wide Web, includes a number of enhancements over an earlier online
version that appeared in 1992 and continues to be available for Gopher
and other text-only Internet browsers. First, the Web version allows a
stronger emphasis on design. The new format, enriched with graphics,
also features navigational buttons and hot links to earlier editions of
The Scientist; academic, industry, and government homepages; documents
from other Web sites; and e-mail addresses of authors. The reader's
access to source materials -- conceptually linked but physically
distinct from the published text -- is therefore significantly broadened
and facilitated in an altogether new way.
Penn and other research libraries are devoting increasing effort to
defining the preserve of academic information on the Internet, and to
exploring the Internet's potential for disseminating the products of
scholarship. This Web edition is the Penn Library's initial foray into
electronic publishing.
The Scientist joins an expanding set of electronic information resources
available through the Penn Library Web, including library catalogs,
journal citation files, reference works, and fulltext files.
