Re: Services that review Web sites in the health sciences
While the HealthWeb project does not provide "reviews" of individual Web
sites per se, it does attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff, and
some of what we are doing might shed some light in this debate.
HealthWeb is a joint project of the health sciences libraries of the Big
Ten universities. We have divided up the subject areas based on strengths
at our institutions, and we are creating a Web site which will point to
valuable Internet resources in each of those areas.
We consider our audience to be health care providers and health sciences
students, and one of our goals is to provide one place for them to check
for pointers and annotations to prescreened sites on any given health
sciences topic.
Our URL is http://www.ghsl.nwu.edu/healthweb/
As Dr. Malet mentioned, our Content group has developed a list of
criteria (see our homepage) for evaluating Internet resources. It was meant
to be used by people developing our subject areas and not individual Web
searchers (we are trying to save you from doing all that!), and it is not
as concrete as we would hope, but neither is the Internet.
We are trying to use the skills we have for building library collections
to build virtual ones, but not always having a publisher, author,
organization or institution to help in judging an item makes life
interesting.
Librarians have been locating, organizing, and providing access to
materials for centuries, and many of us view the Internet as the ultimate
challange.
Selfishly, we are creating the HealthWeb for both our users and ourselves.
Why should someone at each of our 10+ libraries be looking for all the good
radiology resources for our local web page or a class when we can pool our
energy and have more time for other endeavors?
